The cost of credit card processing, in real numbers

How much does credit card processing cost?

Credit card processing typically costs 1.5% to 3.5% of each transaction, according to NerdWallet.

Your own cost for credit card processing depends on card mix, online versus in-person sales, ticket size, and pricing model. The Avendo Rate Guide recommends one number for comparing any offer: your effective rate, which is total fees divided by total card volume. Use the calculator below to find it.

Calculator

What will a processing quote really cost me?

Enter your monthly card sales, number of transactions, and the rate and per-transaction fee from a quote. The calculator shows your estimated monthly and annual fees and the effective rate that quote produces.

Commas, a dollar sign, and a percent sign are accepted.

Your estimate appears here

Fill in all four fields with figures from a quote or your latest statement, then select Calculate.

Assumptions

  • Every transaction is charged the same percentage plus the same fixed fee.
  • Monthly account fees, chargebacks, and refunds are not included.
  • Annual fees are monthly fees multiplied by 12.

This is an estimate for comparing quotes, not a financial decision or a quote from any processor. Avendo routing rates are set per transaction and are not modeled here.

What raises cost

What makes credit card processing more expensive?

Online sales. Card-not-present payments generally qualify for higher interchange than in-person payments, because fraud risk is higher.

Small tickets. A fixed fee such as 30 cents is 3% of a $10 order but 0.1% of a $300 order. Clearly Payments flags businesses with lots of sub-$50 tickets for this reason.

Rewards and business cards. Premium cards usually carry higher interchange than basic debit cards.

Blended pricing. Flat and tiered plans hide the markup inside one rate, which makes it harder to spot when you are overpaying.

What lowers cost

What is the most cost effective credit card processing?

The most cost effective credit card processing is whatever gives you the lowest effective rate on your actual sales. Levers that commonly help:

Matching the model to volume. The U.S. Chamber of Commerce CO notes interchange-plus typically offers lower rates to companies processing more than $10,000 a month.

Competition on markup. Avendo routes each transaction to whichever connected processor offers the best available rate in real time.

Small rate changes. Clearly Payments shows that on $1,000,000 a year in card volume, cutting the effective rate by 0.20% saves $2,000 a year.

Benchmarks

What is the average cost of credit card processing?

Published benchmarks put the average cost of credit card processing in a narrow band. NerdWallet reports 1.5% to 3.5% of each transaction. The Small Business Payments Alliance reports that retailers pay an average of 2.3% on each credit card transaction to card issuers, payment networks, and acquirers.

Common published price points from processors include 2.6% plus 10 cents as a flat-rate example from NerdWallet, and Stripe at 2.9% plus 30 cents per successful domestic card transaction, as reported by Homebase. Helcim states on its own page that its effective rates are based on combined card types and a transaction size of $300, a reminder that every advertised effective rate rests on assumptions you should check against your own ticket size.

Is there truly no cost credit card processing? Programs marketed that way usually move the fee to the customer through a surcharge or cash discount. See the FAQ answer for details.

FAQ

Common questions

How much does credit card processing cost for a small business?

Most small businesses pay between 1.5% and 3.5% of each transaction, according to NerdWallet. Small differences add up. Clearly Payments shows that a business with $1,000,000 a year in card volume saves $2,000 a year by cutting its effective rate by 0.20%.

Do small transactions cost more to process?

Yes, as a percentage. Most pricing includes a fixed per-transaction fee, such as 30 cents, which weighs more heavily on a $10 sale than a $300 sale. Clearly Payments specifically flags businesses with lots of sub-$50 tickets as ones that should check their effective rate closely.

More in the FAQ
Why does online credit card processing cost more?

Online payments are card-not-present transactions, which carry more fraud risk and generally qualify for higher interchange categories than in-person swipes or taps. That is why many flat-rate plans price online sales higher. The U.S. Chamber of Commerce CO cites an example of online store purchases costing 2.9% plus 30 cents, no matter what.

More in the FAQ
Is there such a thing as no cost credit card processing?

Zero-cost programs usually move the fee to the customer through a surcharge or cash discount instead of removing it. Helcim, for example, describes a 0% credit card processing option where it handles the rules for the merchant. Someone still pays interchange, so read how any no cost credit card processing offer works.

More in the FAQ
Why did my credit card processing fees go up?

Fees usually rise because your card mix shifted toward cards with higher interchange, more of your sales moved online, your average ticket fell, or your processor changed its pricing. Compare this month effective rate to prior months, then check line items to find which part of the fee changed.

What is an effective rate in credit card processing?

Your effective rate is your total processing fees divided by your total card volume, shown as a percentage. It is the single best number for comparing processors because it includes every fee. Clearly Payments recommends computing it for the last 90 days before you change anything.
